This class was part internship (students chose their internship from a list of available internships in Oxford, Batesville, and Memphis) and part class, this campaign was our final project.

These poems are all from a poetry class that I completed at the University of Mississippi.

The Problem of Describing Color – For this poem we were assigned to mimic the format of Robert Hass’ “The Problem of Describing Color”. Each student drew a color from a hat; the color I chose was white.

Washstand With Mirror – For this poetry assignment, the whole class took a trip to The University of Mississippi Museum near campus. We were told to view all of the exhibits and choose a piece of art that inspired us to write about. I chose “Washstand With Mirror” by Ron Dale. I was inspired by Dale’s exhibit because the unique shapes reminded me of Dr. Seuss books.

My First Spring – For this assignment, we were told to mimic a certain format and write about our “first ____”, whether it was a first time doing something, a first time going somewhere, it didn’t matter. However, the second part of the poem was supposed to be wild, something that didn’t happen, we were free to let our imagination run wild.

Heat of Summer – This poetry assignment was our “paint chip assignment.” Each student was assigned a color that our teacher had received from a paint store. We were given the paint chip and assigned to write about.

The Tortilla Maker – For this poetry assignment, we were studying William Carlos Williams’ “The Young Housewife”. We were assigned to go out somewhere in Oxford and find someone to write about. I chose to write about a woman who made tortillas at a local Mexican restaurant.

Walmart Poem – This was a fun assignment for me personally. We were assigned to go to Walmart and find someone that “stuck out” in our eyes and write a poem about them.
